Requiem Installation (detail)
2009
mixed media: torn, burned, and shredded personal journals (age 10 – 28)
dimensions: variable
What medium do you use?

Currently I am working with clay – made to look like steel – as I am attracted to materials that are vulnerable to manipulation and transformation. Clay, Metal and Wood transform once the flame is ignited and I am interested in the process that begins to melt, burn and settle into something unique and spontaneous.

Who are your favorite artists?

Louise Bourgeois, Henry Moore, David Nash, Annette Messager

When are you most productive?

5 – 10 AM

Where do you see yourself and your artwork in ten years?

I see myself continuing to spend significant time in the studio creating work in multiple mediums. I see myself as a professor of sculpture working toward a Ph.D. in Art Therapy and building an artist residency that incorporates the arts and healthcare for women and children who have survived traumatic experiences.

What is the role of the artist in society?

To say what might not have been said – in the context of a visual medium - to give permission to express ourselves – and to heal our bodies by releasing emotions through color, texture, text and to turn the emotions into something visceral and tangible.

What advice would you give to a young artist?

The Vintage Man by HAFIZ

The
Difference
Between a good artist
And a great one

Is:

The novice
Will often lay down his tool
Or brush

Then pick up an invisible club
On the mind’s table

And helplessly smash the easels and
Jade.

Whereas the vintage man
No longer hurts himself or anyone

And keeps on
Sculpting

Light.

Cole has designed Strength in Courage - that asks for the viewer to anticipate the space between the lines, to consider the perspective of merging the complexity of chaos and balance. She will investigate the power of art in the health care setting and beyond, as she tours from California to Alaska by bicycle to raise funds for the Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland. She is working on a series that combines ceramic and metal arts with the materials associated with cycling and the hospital rooms, such as bicycle tubes and IV tubes - both that can carry our energy into forward momentum and positive thinking.

Cole's work has been featured in several national group and solo exhibitions. Her artwork resides in several private collections. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Alaska Anchorage and is currently pursuing the dual degree MFA/MA at the San Francisco Art Institute.
