My artwork recalls cross-cultural symbolism and mythic elements, referencing the history of those symbols while incorporating their current manifestations as part of our collective psyche. Finding a visual expression through beauty and kitsch, grace and grit, the ridiculous and the sublime, my work draws from the nostalgic perspective of art nouveau and 60’s psychadelica, attempting to navigate the poles between the populace and the elitist conceptions of imagery. The symbology I depict is a language of ideas and interactions that function as a microcosm of images in it of itself within the macrocosm of broader inter-related ideas.
Like the artifacts from ancient civilizations, there is always a delineation from the relics left behind and the thoughts and character that produced the intellectual climate that created them. The underlying conceptual grounding of the work, the unseen other half that produces these artifacts, is a dialogue between today’s leading theoretical discussions and research. Alchemically blending ideas of science and religion, utopic visions and cataclysm, global and local society, current culture and history, tabooed feminism and goddess iconography, consumption and transcendence, an amalgam of strange bedfellows becomes the source of new intersections and discussions.
